Creating an ID.me account gives you a single sign-in to access your benefits, services, and exclusive discounts. This article explains where to go before you create your ID.me account and how to set it up.
Before creating your ID.me account
- You can only have one ID.me account associated with you as an individual. It’s similar to having one driver’s license or Social Security number. If you accidentally create a second ID.me account, visit I have more than one account.
- Use your account for both work and personal use. For example, use your account to both access federal and state benefits and to get discounts through ID.me Shop. Other examples:
- Work – Sign in to your IRS Business Tax Account (BTA) to view your business tax information or to the Department of Veterans Affairs to enroll for Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT).
- Personal – Sign to access your tax return information and to get discounts through ID.me Shop.
- You can have several email addresses connected to your ID.me account. If you’d like to use your account for both personal use and for work, add more email addresses to your account.
1. Start at the website you’re verifying for
Whether you’re verifying your identity or community, you’ll start at a specific website.
Organizations and government agencies
If you’re verifying your identity for a business, organization, or government agency—also known as an ID.me partner—start at their website. Use the links below to find the website for the partner you need to access using ID.me and where to find the ID.me button. You’ll find the website to get started and steps to connect your ID.me account to the organization.
- Federal agencies - For example, the Internal Revenue Service, Veterans Affairs, and more. For a full list of federal agencies we partner with, visit our Federal agencies page.
- State agencies - Agencies that provide unemployment insurance and other services. For a full list of state agencies we partner with, visit our State benefits and services page.
- Healthcare - E-prescribing for medical providers and patient verification.
- Employment - For example, Indeed and pre-employment verification.
- Financial - FileYourTaxes.com, Security Benefit.
Community discounts
If you’re verifying for a community (nurse, military, teacher, etc.) to save on brands and products, start at ID.me Shop. To learn how, visit Getting started with Community verification.
2. Find the ID.me button
When you’re on the organization's website, look for an ID.me button that says: Create an account, Sign in with ID.me, or Verify with ID.me.
Where the button displays varies by website. For example, it could display immediately on the homepage or during checkout when getting discounts through ID.me Shop.
Select the ID.me button to go to the ID.me account creation page.
3. Create your ID.me account
Keep in mind:
- Only create an ID.me account if you never created an account in the past.
- If you already have an ID.me account and can’t sign in, reset your password or visit I can’t sign in to my account.
If you don’t already have an ID.me account, follow these steps to create your account:
- Select Create an ID.me account.
- Enter your email address and password, then select Create account. Learn how to create a strong password.
- Follow the prompts to finish setting up your ID.me account. You may need to confirm your email address and set up multi-factor authentication (MFA) to help secure your account.
After you’re done setting up your account, follow the prompts to connect your account to the partner organization, and consent to share your information with them.
