How do I complete the LOA1 identity-proofing process?

The process for verifying an identity at Level of Assurance (LOA) 1 simply consists of creating an ID.me account and confirming the email address associated with that account.

Step 1:  Sign in to an existing ID.me account or create a new account by clicking "Sign-up".

Step 2:  Add an additional layer of security to your account with 2-factor authentication.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) strengthens access security by requiring two methods (also referred to as factors) to verify your identity. These factors can include something you know - like a username and password, plus something you have - like a smartphone app to approve authentication requests.

2FA protects against phishing, social engineering, and password brute-force attacks and secures your logins from attackers exploiting weak or stolen credentials.  More information on 2-factor authentication can be found by clicking here.

If you want to skip this step, click "No, I do not want to secure my account at this time" at the bottom of the page.

Step 3:  Confirm your e-mail address.

Once your email address is confirmed, you will have successfully created an ID.me account at an Identity Level of Assurance 1 (LOA1).  Additional identity proofing steps may be necessary if a higher level of assurance is needed.  For more information on the LOA3 verification process, please click here.
