Once you've verified your identity for the IRS, you can sign in to various IRS applications using your ID.me account. Use the same ID.me account, whether you’re accessing an application for personal or work purposes. This article explains how to sign in and access IRS services.
Sign in to IRS applications
To sign in using your ID.me account:
- Go to the IRS application or service you need. For a list of common IRS applications, visit ID.me Government.
- Select Sign in with ID.me.
- Enter your email address and password, then complete multi-factor authentication (MFA)
- Follow the prompts to access the IRS application or upgrade your account (if required).

Upgrade your account
If you’ve already verified your identity with another organization but are accessing IRS applications for the first time, you may need to upgrade your ID.me account by providing additional information to meet IRS security requirements.
What you need to upgrade
You will need:
- A mobile phone with a camera
- An email address
- Photo ID (U.S. driver's license or state ID, U.S. passport, or U.S. passport card)
- Social Security Number
1. Get Started
To get started:
- Go to the IRS application login page.
- Select Sign in with ID.me and complete the sign-in process using multi-factor authentication (MFA).
2. Upload document or take a selfie
The next steps you take depend on the documentation or selfie you need to submit. For example, you may be prompted to upload a document, take a video selfie, or upgrade your selfie for the IRS.
3. Share your information
After you successfully submit your document or selfie, you will be asked to consent to share your information with the IRS. After consenting, you will be able to access IRS online services.

If multiple attempts to submit your selfie are unsuccessful, you will be redirected to verify your identity through a short video call.
