To schedule an In-Person Verification appointment, you will need to set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). If you do not have a mobile device, you may select Backup Codes to generate 12 one-time-use codes you can use for MFA.
Steps to set up Backup Codes for MFA:
1. Select Backup Codes when prompted to set up MFA.It will be the last option on the list of MFA methods. You may have to scroll down if you cannot see it. |
||
2. View the list of your unique 12 backup codes.Each code is numbered to help keep track of which codes you already used. |
||
3. Select Print and safe-keep a physical copy of your backup codes.We recommend that you also write down all of the backup codes on a piece of paper. Make sure to copy the full codes correctly, as well as their numbered placement. You may also save these codes on your personal computer as a .pdf file. Additionally, these codes will be sent to the email registered to your account. Do not leave a file of these codes on a public computer and never share your codes with anyone. |
||
4. Return to the ID.me MFA set up screen.You will be asked to enter a specific backup. Make sure you enter the correct code. |
Backup codes are only available as an option to those eligible for IPV. To use your ID.me credentials with other ID.me partners, you may need to set up a different MFA sign in method.
What happens if I use all my backup codes?
When you use your last code, you will get 12 new backup codes. These will follow the next set of numbers (e.g., 13-24, 25-36, etc). Your last code won’t be invalidated until you confirm your new 12 backup codes.
