The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) works with ID.me to verify FERC users requesting information online. To access protected FERC records, you will need to verify your identity through ID.me. This article explains how to verify your identity.
ID.me provides the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) an identity proofing service for online information requests. ID.me does not process or approve FERC requests for information.
How to verify
Follow the steps below to verify your identity.
1. Get started
There are two different forms you can submit to FERC with ID.me verification. You can:
- Submit a request for individual access to records protected under the Privacy Act, or
- Submit a consent form to provide FERC authorization to disclose your records to another person or entity.
Fill out the appropriate form with all the required information and select Verify with ID.me to begin the identity verification process. You will be directed to the ID.me sign-in page.
2. Verify your identity
You can use the self-service verification method or short video call to verify your identity for FERC. For steps to verify your identity, visit Verifying your identity on a short video call.
If you can’t complete the verification process due to an issue with your documents, you will be routed to verify your identity over a video call with a Video Chat Agent.
What is an ID.me Video Chat Agent?
If you are having difficulty with verifying your identity online, you may be directed to meet with a Video Chat Agent on a video call.
A Video Chat Agent is a trained identity specialist employed by ID.me to prove your identity. When verifying your identity on a video call, you may be asked to upload photos of your identity documents and show the physical copies to an ID.me Video Chat Agent. You may need to show either two primary documents or one primary document and one secondary documents and/or proof of a Social Security Number. Wait times for a video call may vary, but you can schedule a video call appointment for a day and time that’s convenient for you.
After you’re verified
If you verified over a video call with a Video Chat Agent, follow these instructions to continue your application process:
- Return to the FERC website. You can:
- Submit a request for individual access to records protected under the Privacy Act, or
- Submit a consent form to provide FERC authorization to disclose your records to another person or entity.
- Enter your basic information and then select Verify with ID.me.
- Sign in to your ID.me account with your email address and password.
- Select Allow and continue to share your identity information with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
You can now continue with submitting a request for individual access to records protected under the Privacy Act, or submit a consent form to provide FERC authorization to disclose your records to another person or entity.
