Sterling Identity is working with ID.me to verify applicants for their employment background check; use the following article to guide you through ID.me’s identity verification process.
Sign in with ID.me
If you already have an ID.me Account, enter your login information and select Sign in with ID.me.
If you do not have an account, create one and confirm your email.
Please do not create more than one account.
Multi-factor Authentication
In some cases, you may be required to set up multi-factor authentication (MFA) to further protect your account. For steps-by-step instructions for setting up MFA, select one of the following MFA methods:
Verify your identity
You will see four methods for verifying your identity. For steps on how to use your phone number to verify your identity, go to Option 1. For all other verification methods, scroll down to Option 2. When ready, select Start Now under the option you would like to choose and review the respective steps below. |

If you see the message “We couldn’t verify your identity,” select Retry to go back to the beginning of Verify your identity. From there you can try a different verification method.

Social Security Number (may not be required)
In some cases, you may be asked to provide your Social Security Number (SSN). Providing your SSN will help ID.me make sure that your account can never be duplicated—whether accidentally by you or in a malicious attempt by someone pretending to be you. |

Confirm your information
Once you have completed your identity verification, you’ll need to confirm your information. |

1. Review the details and make sure that they are correct. |

If you see something that is incorrect, you can change it by selecting Edit. |

2. Once your information is correct, select Continue. |

3. Select Allow to send your data to Sterling Identity. |

Now that your identity has been verified and your information was shared with Sterling Identity, you may continue your background check. |
Trusted Referees
If your online identity verification attempt was unsuccessful, you may see the option to connect with an ID.me Trusted Referee or Video Chat Agent.
A Video Chat Agent, also known as a Trusted Referee, is a trained identity specialist employed by ID.me to prove your identity. When verifying your identity with a Trusted Referee, you may be asked to upload photos of your identification documents and show the physical copies to an ID.me Trusted Referee. You may need to show either two primary documents or one primary document and two secondary documents and/or proof of a Social Security number.
