Push notifications is a secure multi-factor authentication (MFA) method that helps protect your ID.me account. This article shows you how to set up push notification MFA using the ID.me Authenticator app, approve sign-in requests, and add it as an additional sign-in method.

What to know before setting up push notifications MFA
- Required app: Download the free ID.me Authenticator app from the App Store or Google Play. If you’re unable to use the ID.me Authenticator app, choose passkey MFA, the safest MFA method available.
- Enable notifications: Ensure that push notifications are enabled for the ID.me Authenticator app.
Add push notifications if you already use MFA
If you already have another MFA method set up, you can add push notification MFA as an additional method:
- Sign in to your ID.me account using your current MFA method.
- In “My Account”, select Sign In & Security.
- Next to push notification, select Set Up.
- On your mobile device, download the ID.me Authenticator app from the App Store or Google Play.
- Follow steps 3-4 from the Set up push notifications below.
Set up push notification MFA
To set up push notification MFA:
- When prompted, select Push Notification.
- On your mobile device, download the ID.me Authenticator app from the App Store or Google Play.
- In your browser, select Continue.
- Get the sign-in request:
- If you started on a mobile device: Select Send sign-in request.
- If you started on a computer: Scan the QR code that’s shown on your computer screen.

Select Yes to approve the sign-in and enable push notifications.
Note: Note: If you didn’t receive the registration request, start over.
Approve sign-in with the ID.me Authenticator app
To sign in using push notifications MFA:
- Sign in to your ID.me account with your email and password.
- Select Push Notification.
- You will receive a push notification from the ID.me Authenticator app on your smartphone. Select the notification. If you don’t receive a notification, verify that push notifications are enabled for the ID.me Authenticator app.
- Select Yes in the app to approve your sign-in.
Troubleshoot push notification issues
If you don’t receive a push notification from the ID.me Authenticator app:
- Make sure push notifications are enabled in your device settings.
- Confirm that your device has an internet connection.
- Open the ID.me Authenticator app directly to check for pending requests.
- If needed, return to the sign-in screen and try again.
