To verify your first responder status and receive discounts, you’ll need to submit a document based on your job title and whether you’re active or retired. Accepted documents include ID cards, verification letters, retirement certificates, and more. This article explains what qualifies and what doesn’t — so you can quickly prove you’re a first responder.
Tip: Your document must include your first and last name and your job title.
Documents for active first responders
To verify as an active first responder in the U.S. or Canada, you’ll need one of the following:
- Identification (ID) card
- Training certification
- Signed verification letter on official letterhead
- Pay stub (not acceptable for Canadian first responders)
- Notification of personnel action (not acceptable for Canadian first responders)
Documents for retired first responders
To verify as a retired first responder in the U.S. or Canada, you’ll need one of the following:
- Retired ID card or badge
- Pension statement
- Certificate of retirement
Unacceptable first responder documents
The following documents are not accepted for first responder verification:
- Expired IDs and documents (unless it's a valid retiree ID card issued after retirement)
- Paper IDs
- Federal ID cards issued by any federal department or agency
- Transcripts, department logos, business cards, emblems, or uniform photos without proper identification
