The ID.me Authenticator app is free and lets you set up code generator and push notification MFA. It's solely for MFA, not for identity verification, and can be used with a smartwatch if set up. The app is available on iOS and Android devices.

Download the Authenticator app
There are two ways to download the ID.me Authenticator app:
App stores
- For iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch), visit the App Store.
- For Android devices, visit the Google Play Store.
- If you experience issues downloading or installing the app, ensure you have a reliable WiFi or internet connection.
During MFA Setup
- When setting up MFA for your ID.me account, you’ll be prompted to enter your email address or phone number to receive a download link.

Manage Authenticator app settings
To manage your app settings:
- Open the ID.me Authenticator app on your device.
- Select the “≡” hamburger icon in the upper right corner to open the menu.
From the menu, you can change the following settings:
- Touch ID or Face ID: Enable or disable biometric access using your device's fingerprint or facial recognition.
- Dark Theme: Toggle between dark or light mode for the app's appearance.
- Show Date Added: Display or hide the date you added a code generator. This is useful if you've added multiple code generators.
- Submit Support Request: Contact ID.me Support.
Find your app version
To find the version number of the ID.me Authenticator app:
- Open the ID.me Authenticator app.
- Select the “≡” hamburger icon.
- The version number displays in the menu.
Update the Authenticator app
Your device may automatically prompt you to download the latest version. If not, manually update the app:
- For iOS devices, go to the App Store.
- For Android devices, go to the Google Play Store.
- Select Update to install the latest version.
Use your smartwatch with the Authenticator app
You can use an Apple Watch or Android smartwatch to approve your sign-in or view code generator codes through the ID.me Authenticator app.
- Apple Watch: Can be used for both push notifications and code generator sign-ins.
- Android smartwatches: Can only approve sign-ins via push notifications.
