This article explains how to verify your identity on a short video call.
Verifying with a short video call requires you to upload your identification document, then join a brief video call with an ID.me Video Chat Agent.
Before you start
Use the short video call pathway if the organization you are accessing lets you choose this pathway or if you were unable to complete the video selfie.
Tip: Verify your identity faster with Self-Service, without needing to join a video call.
What you’ll need
To verify on a short video call, you’ll need:
- A mobile phone that has a camera
- Email address
- Photo ID (U.S. driver's license or state ID, U.S. passport, or U.S. passport card)
- Social Security number
1. Get started
To get started:
- Go to the website of the organization or agency you need to verify for, and select the ID.me button.
- Sign in to your existing ID.me account or create a new account.
- Complete multi-factor authentication (MFA) or add MFA to protect your account.
- Select Video Call.
Note: If you don’t have the required ID, select I don't have a driver's license, state ID, passport, or passport card to verify on an extended video call.
2. Upload your document

Take and submit photos of your identity document
Upload your US driver’s license or state photo ID, or select Change document to upload a passport or passport card. Learn how to upload photos of your documents.
- Confirm your phone number.
- Enter your Social Security number, then select Continue.
- Review your information and select Yes to confirm it is accurate. If something is inaccurate, select No and update your information.
3. Join the video call
- Select Join video call.
- Allow access to your device’s microphone and camera.
- Consent to have the call recorded, then select Join video call again.
- Stay on the call as the agent compares you to the document you uploaded. This process takes only a few minutes.
4. Share your information
To complete verification after meeting with an agent:
- Return to the organization’s website and sign in using your ID.me account.
- Select Allow to consent to share your information and access the organization or agency’s services.

- I met with an agent, but cannot access the organization: Make sure to share your information with the organization. Go back to the organization’s application and sign in using your ID.me account. When prompted, allow consent to share your information.
- If you're unable to verify your identity, you may need to finish verifying on an extended video call.
