ID.me offers several ways to verify your Military status.
To verify your status as a surviving spouse, you will need to select a verification option and provide the information requested.
If you select to verify as a surviving spouse via the document upload option, be sure to have scanned copies or digital photos of the following document(s) before you begin:
Service Member
If your spouse passed away while still serving, please provide:
- Dependent ID Card, or
- Casualty Report (DD Form 1300)
Retiree
If your spouse was retired from the military, please provide:
- Dependent ID Card
Veteran
If your spouse passed away after discharge, please provide:
- DD214, or
- NGB form 22, or
- VA Eligibility Letter (if you are receiving VA benefits)
Steps to verify as a Military surviving spouse:

Sign in to your ID.me Account, or create a new one.

Look for the “My IDs” section and select Manage IDs.

Look for the “Military” card and select Add.

Select a verification option and be prepared to provide the information requested.

For Your Current Military Affiliation, select Surviving Spouse.

Enter your personal information.

Then enter your spouse’s information. Please select the “Military Member’s Affiliation” based on your spouse's status at the time they passed away.

Select Continue.

Depending on the option selected, we will verify your personal information and request additional information if needed.
