To begin using ID.me, you’ll first need to create an account. Anyone 18 years or older can sign up. This article explains how to sign up for ID.me, confirm your email, and set up a password.

How to create your ID.me account

To create your ID.me account:

1. Start at the website or organization where you need to use ID.me. If you’re not sure where to begin, contact the organization directly.
2. Select the ID.me button.
3. Select Create an account.
   
4. Enter your personal email address (double check for typos).
5. Enter a strong password, then select Create account.
   
6. Check your email inbox to confirm your email address.
7. Set up multi-factor authentication (MFA).

What happens after you create your account

After creating your ID.me account, what happens next depends on whether the organization is actively using ID.me and whether you've already verified your identity or community.

• Look for the ID.me button on the organization's website that you want to access. If you don’t see the ID.me button on their website, it may not be available yet. Contact the organization directly for more information.
• Already verified? Sign in and give consent to share your verified information.
• Haven’t verified yet? You’ll be prompted to verify your identity or community.

Troubleshoot creating your account

Made a typo in your email address?

If you accidentally misspelled your email address in the email field, you won’t be able to finish creating your account. Start the account creation process over and carefully enter the correct email address.

What to do if you signed up on ID.me

If you created your account from ID.me, go to the website where you need to use ID.me. Select the ID.me button, sign in to your account, then follow the prompts.
