This article provides an overview of the multi-factor authentication (MFA) methods you can use to keep your ID.me account secure. MFA makes your account more secure by requiring an additional step to sign in. After you enter your account email and password, you’ll be prompted to complete MFA.
Commonly-used MFA methods
We recommend setting up at least two MFA methods to ensure you can always access your account.
MFA method and Security strength | About MFA method |
---|---|
Passkey |
Use your face, fingerprint, or PIN; phishing-resistant. |
Code Generator |
Enter a rotating six-digit code from the ID.me Authenticator app. |
Push Notification Moderately secure |
Approve sign-in using your ID.me Authenticator app. |
Text message or phone call Fairly secure |
Enter a 6-digit code that you receive in a text message or phone call. |
Other methods
These methods require specific hardware:
MFA method and Security strength | About MFA method |
---|---|
Security Key |
Tap a physical USB security key to complete sign-in. |
NFC-Enabled Security Key |
Tap a Yubikey™ 5 NFC to your phone to sign in. Requires the ID.me Authenticator app. |
