You can verify your identity even if your driver’s license or state ID is expired. This article explains what you’ll need, how to get started, and how to upload your expired ID along with a renewal, extension, or temporary document.
What you’ll need
Expired driver’s license or state ID
- Must have expired within the last 12 months
- IDs expired more than 12 months ago are not accepted
Valid renewal, extension document, or temporary ID
- Must be valid (not voided)
- Must be issued by the same state as your expired ID
- Paper or temporary licenses or IDs are acceptable
- The personal information must match your expired license or state ID, including: Name, date of birth, identification number
1. Start the verification process
To begin:
- Go to the website of the organization or agency you need to verify for, and select the ID.me button.
- Sign in to your existing ID.me account or create a new account.
- Complete multi-factor authentication (MFA) or set it up if needed.
- Select I don’t live in the United States or I don’t have the above documents. Do not select Self-Service or Video Chat Agent as these options require an unexpired driver’s license, passport, or passport card.
- Select Get started and follow the prompts to enter your personal information.
2. Select your documents
You’ll need to select:
- Two primary identification documents, or
- One primary and one secondary document
In addition to the primary or secondary documents, you may need to provide additional documents for:
- Proving your Social Security number
- Proving your current address
- Proving a recent name change
- You can use your expired driver’s license as a primary document. When prompted, select Expired U.S. State Driver’s License.
- Confirm that the information you previously entered matches what is on your expired ID.
- Select Yes, I will take a photo of my renewal, extension document, or temporary ID.
- Select any other required primary or secondary documents.
3. Upload your documents
- Next to “Expired U.S. State Driver's License”, select Choose image to upload a file from your device, or Take photo to take a photo from your mobile device.
- Upload:
- Front of your expired driver’s license
- Back of your expired driver’s license
- Front of your renewal, extension document, or temporary ID
- Upload any other required documents.
Tip: If you're uploading documents from your device, acceptable files types include JPEG, PNG, and PDF.

4. Join the extended video call
- After you upload your documents, they will be reviewed by an ID.me document reviewer.
- Once reviewed, you’ll be prompted to join an extended video call.
- Follow the agent’s instructions to complete verification.
