You may have created a new ID.me account without realizing you already had a verified account. To use the email from your other account, you must first close that account. After it’s closed, that email will be available for use on your verified account.
This article explains how to close your other account and update the email on your verified account.
Note: If you have multiple accounts and need to close one, make sure you close the other account. Do not close your verified account.
Existing (verified) account vs other accounts
- Existing (verified) account: The account you used in the past to verify your identity. You want to add the email on your other account to this account.
- Other account: Another account that you created more recently. It may have the email address you’d like to use on your verified account.
Step 1: Sign in to your other account
- Go to the ID.me sign-in page
- Enter the email address that’s on your other account (not your verified account), then enter your password.
- Select Sign in.
If you have trouble signing in, visit I can’t sign in to my account.
Step 2: Close your other account
To close your other account:
- Sign in to your ID.me account.
- In the top menu, select Sign In & Security, then select Privacy.
- Under “Manage my data,” select Remove my data.
- Select Close my account. Select a reason for closing your account.
- Select Yes, close my account.
Step 3: Add the email to your verified account
- Go to the ID.me sign-in page and enter the email and password that’s on your verified account.
- Add the email address you want to use. For step-by-step instructions, visit Updating your account email address.
Troubleshoot email issues
I got an error message when trying to use or add an email
If you saw an error message, visit Troubleshooting "email already in use" issues for steps to fix this.
I’m not sure which account is my verified account
- When you’re signed in to your account, go to My Wallet.
- Look for an ID that says “Verified Identity”.
If the card isn’t there, you can proceed with closing your account, since it’s likely your non-verified account.
