If your name change request in your ID.me profile was rejected, you can try again. This article explains why requests get denied and shows you how to fix common issues like selecting the wrong update reason or uploading the wrong documents.
1. Choose the right reason for your name update
Since there are two different scenarios to request an update to your name, make sure to select the correct one:
- Change my legal name – Choose this option only if you legally changed your name. This means you changed your legal name with government agencies and you’d like your new name to be reflected in your ID.me profile.
- Edit an error in my name – Choose this option if you notice a typo in your name and need to fix it.
If you choose the wrong reason, your name update request will be rejected.
2. Update the name fields
After you choose a name update option, you’ll see a screen with name fields pre-filled with the current name on the ID.me profile.
Delete any part of your name that is incorrect, then enter the correct spelling or new legal name in the appropriate field.
If someone else’s name displays in the name fields
- If someone else’s name displays, you may have accidentally signed in to someone else’s ID.me account. To use an ID.me account in your name, sign out of the account, then sign in to your own ID.me account or create an account.
- Do not request a name update if you’re signed into another person’s account. An ID.me account is tied to an individual’s identity, similar to a driver’s license.
3. Upload required documents for your name change
After you confirm you’re signed in to your ID.me account, make sure you have the correct identity document, based on the name change option you chose. Review these document requirements before you submit another name change update:
Change your legal name
To change your legal name in your account you need to upload two documents:
- A primary document with your new legal name
- A linking document that shows the relationship between the name on your ID.me account and your new legal name. Linking documents can include your marriage certificate, domestic partnership, or legal name change document.
Tips for success:
- Your primary document must show your new legal name. If you don't have a document with your new name, we cannot update the name on your ID.me account.
- The linking document must be an original or certified copy. Screenshots and photocopies are not accepted.
- If you have changed your name multiple times since creating your ID.me account, a linking doc for each change is needed. Include all documents in the same photo that you upload.
Edit an error in your name
To fix a typo in your name you may be asked to upload one primary document. The name on this document must match the name that is on your ID.me account.
Resubmit your name change request
