Taxpayers and tax professionals will be able to prove their identity with ID.me by uploading government documents, taking a video selfie, and filling out personal information. Once complete, taxpayers can access the IRS application for which they verified.
Once taxpayers and tax professionals are verified with ID.me, they can use their ID.me account to log in across government websites and private sector organizations wherever they see ID.me’s button.
Do I need to verify my identity for the IRS?
Yes. You need to verify your identity using ID.me in order to access various IRS applications. This applies to those who do not have an ID.me account and those who have an ID.me account and wish to access an IRS application.
Can ID.me verify users who are under 18?
No. ID.me does not verify individuals who are under the age of 18. If you are under the age of 18 and need to verify your identity to access the IRS, you must use an alternative option.
Do I need a separate personal and work ID.me account?
No. You need to use your one ID.me account for both business and personal use. Your ID.me account can be used for business purposes by adding your work or business email address to your account.

ID.me does not process tax returns for the IRS. As a technology provider, ID.me provides identity verification for IRS applications. If you received an IRS Letter 5071C, 6331C, 5447C or 5747C directing you to verify your identity and tax return information, you must verify information from your tax return with the IRS to complete the process.
