For questions about your IRS error codes, tax transcripts, refund status, and tax payments, you must contact the IRS directly. ID.me can only help with identity verification. This article outlines common scenarios that require reaching out to the IRS for additional support.
IRS error codes
If you see one of the following IRS error codes after verifying your identity, you’ll need to contact the IRS directly for help. ID.me Support can’t assist with these issues:
- 5001 – Displays after signing in to your ID.me account.
- 6000 – A security condition is preventing you from accessing an IRS online service. You won’t be able to use the service right now.
- 6001 – The name on your ID.me account doesn’t match what the Social Security Administration has on file. You may need to update your name on your ID.me account.
- 6101 – You verified your identity without using a Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification number (ITIN). The IRS currently requires one of these to access online services.
