The California Employment Development Department (EDD) works with ID.me to help verify your identity, and status as a medical provider, for disability insurance (DI). This article explains how to verify your identity as a medical provider using self-service or on a video call.
Before you verify
Before you begin the verification process, gather the identification documents you’ll need to verify. The document you’ll need depends on if you verify using self-service or on a video call.

1. Sign in to your CA EDD account
To begin the verification process:
- Visit the California EDD site and in the site header, select Benefits Login.
- Sign in with an existing EDD account or to create a new account, select Register Now.
- Select SDI Online, scroll to where it says “Physician/Practitioner”, and select Register as a Physician/Practitioner.
- Read California EDD’s terms and conditions, then select I Agree to confirm you agree to the terms.
- When prompted, select Verify with ID.me. You’ll be automatically directed to the ID.me sign-in page.
2. Create an ID.me account
To continue:
- If you have an ID.me account, sign in using your email address and password. Otherwise, select Create an ID.me account.
Note: Do not create more than one ID.me account. For more information, visit Can I have more than one ID.me account? - For new ID.me accounts, set up multi-factor authentication (MFA) to further protect your account. Otherwise, sign in using your MFA method. For step-by-step instructions for setting up MFA, select one of the following MFA methods:
3. Verify your identity
After you are signed in to your ID.me account, you can verify your identity using self-service or over a video call with a live agent.
To verify your identity using self-service:
- When choosing how to verify your identity, select Self-Service, then select Continue.
- Follow the prompts to upload your US driver’s license or state photo ID, or select Change Document to upload a passport or passport card. You can take a photo of the document with your smartphone or upload one from your computer.
- Take and submit a video selfie. Your selfie will only be used to confirm that the person in the selfie matches your government ID. You may request that ID.me delete your Biometric Data at any time.
- Enter your Social Security number.
- Review and confirm that all of your information is accurate, then select Yes. After ID.me verifies your identity you will receive a confirmation message as a way to protect you from fraud.
- Select Allow to finish your identity verification process.
- Continue to verify yourself as a medical provider.
Verify as a medical provider
To complete the verification process, you need to enter your National Provider Identifier (NPI) credentials:
- Select Begin.
- Enter your personal Type 1 NPI number, then select Continue.
- Review your information to ensure it’s correct, then select Continue.
- If your credentials are approved, you will see a screen that says "You're Verified." Select Continue.
- Select Allow and continue to securely share your identity information with EDD and enable you to access the EDD application for which you verified.
Finish verification
To finish the verification process:
- In your CA EDD account, enter your information to the required fields, then select Next.
- Choose a communication preference, then select Submit.
Your verification is complete! You will receive an email from California EDD with more information.
To verify your identity on a video call:
- When choosing how to verify your identity, select Video Chat Agent.
Note: If you don’t have the required identity documents, select I don’t have any of the documents listed above to verify on an extended video call. - Select Get Started, accept ID.me's consent to collect personally identifiable information, then select Continue.
- Follow the prompts to upload your US Driver’s License or State Photo ID, or select Change document to upload a Passport or Passport Card. You can take a photo of the document with your smartphone or upload one from your computer.
- Enter your remaining information, including your Social Security number, then select Continue. Learn why ID.me asks for your Social Security number.
Attend the video call
During the call with your Video Chat Agent, the agent will compare you to your uploaded identity document. To connect to a live call:
- After your information is confirmed, you will be prompted to join a video call. Select Join video call to proceed.
- Wait for the next Video Chat Agent to be available.
- Consent to having your call recorded, then select Join video call when prompted. You may request that ID.me delete your Biometric Data at any time.
- Stay on the call as the Video Chat Agent compares you to your identity document photo. This should only take a moment.
- After your video call is complete, you will receive an email with instructions. Go back to the SDI Medical Registration process and Sign in to your California EDD.
- Follow the steps below to verify your medical practitioner status.
Verify as a medical provider
To complete the verification process, you need to enter your National Provider Identifier (NPI) credentials:
- Select Begin.
- Enter your personal Type 1 NPI number, then select Continue.
- Review your information to ensure it’s correct, then select Continue.
