Using the National Practitioner Data Bank for work

The National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) works with ID.me to provide authentication and identity verification through the Health and Human Services (HHS) External User Management System (XMS).

This article explains how to enable your NPDB account to use multi-factor authentication (MFA) and to verify your identity.

Get started

How you begin depends on whether you already have an ID.me account or need to create an ID.me account for the first time.

Already have an account?

Do not create another account if you already have one. Instead, you’ll need to:

  • Add your work email to your ID.me account
  • Enable MFA and share your information

Add your work email address

To add your work email address to your ID.me account:

  1. Go to ID.me My Account and sign in.
  2. From My Account, select Profile, then in the Email section, select +Add an email.

  3. Enter your work email address. If you want to label this email address as your work email, check the box next to "Work".

  4. Select Send confirmation. A confirmation message will be sent to your work email.

    Tip: If you don't receive the email, check your spam folder. You can select Resend confirmation to send a new confirmation email.
  5. Select the link in the email to confirm this email address.

After you have confirmed the email, it displays in the “Profile” tab of your account.

Enable MFA and share your information

To enable MFA and share your identity information with NPDB:

  1. On the NPDB website, select Sign in with a DBID and User ID.
  2. Enter your DBID, user ID, and NPDB password, then select Continue.
  3. On the Entity Registration Confirmation page, select Link to an MFA Service.
  4. On the Select a Login Method page, select Sign In with ID.me.
  5. Sign in with your ID.me account and complete multi-factor authentication (MFA).
  6. If required, follow the prompts to provide any additional information.
  7. From the Authorize screen, review the information that HHS XMS will receive and then select Allow to consent to share that information with them.
  8. Return to the NPDB on your organization's Entity Registration Confirmation page.

Creating an account for the first time?

If you have never created an ID.me account, you need to:

  • Create an ID.me account using your personal email address
  • Add your work email to your ID.me account
  • Verify your identity

Create an ID.me account

To help ensure you always have access to your ID.me account, create your ID.me account using your personal email address, then add your work email.

To create a new account:

  1. Go to ID.me My Account and select Create an account.
  2. Enter your personal email address and a strong password, then select Create account. Learn how to create a strong password.
  3. Follow the prompts to finish setting up your ID.me account and to confirm ownership of your email.

Add your work email to your account

To add your work email:

  1. Enter your work email address. If you want to label this email address as your work email, check the box next to "Work."

  2. Select Send confirmation. A confirmation message will be sent to your work email address.

  3. Select the link in the email to confirm this email address.

After you have confirmed the email, it displays in the “Profile” tab of your account.

To verify your identity:

  1. On the NPDB website, select Sign in with a DBID and User ID.
  2. Enter your DBID, user ID, and NPDB password, then select Continue.
  3. On the Entity Registration Confirmation page, select Link to an MFA Service.
  4. On the “Select a Login Method” page, select Sign In with ID.me.
  5. Sign in with your ID.me account and complete multi-factor authentication (MFA).
  6. If required, follow the prompts to provide any additional information.
  7. From the Authorize screen, review the information that HHS XMS will receive and then select Allow to consent to share that information with them.
  8. Return to the NPDB on your organization's Entity Registration Confirmation page.

Verify your identity

To verify your identity:

  1. Go to the NPDB website and select Sign in with your MFA account.
  2. Enter your DBID, user ID, and NPDB password, then select Continue.
  3. On the Select a Login Method page, select Sign in with ID.me.
  4. Sign in to your ID.me account and set-up your multi-factor authentication method. Follow the prompts to complete your MFA setup.
  5. You will return to the NPDB on your organization’s Entity Registration Confirmation page, select Continue.
  6. On the “Select an Option” page, select the link Verify your identity now. You will be directed to ID.me.
  7. You may need to sign into your ID.me account again and complete multi-factor authentication (MFA).
  8. You can verify using one of these methods:
  9. From the Authorize screen, review the information that HHS XMS will receive, then select Allow to consent to share that information with them.
  10. Return to the NPDB on your organization's Entity Registration Confirmation page.
