If you created a duplicate ID.me account and want to use its email on your verified account, you’ll need to delete the duplicate first. This article shows how to close it and add the email to your verified account.
Note: If you have multiple accounts and need to close one, make sure you close the duplicate account. Do not close your verified account.
Understand your accounts
- Verified account: The account you used in the past to verify your identity.
- Duplicate account: Another account that you created more recently. It has the email address you’d like to use on your verified account.
Step 1: Sign in to your duplicate account
- Go to the ID.me sign-in page
- Enter the email address that’s on your duplicate account (not your verified account), then select Continue. enter your password.
- Enter your password, then select Continue.
If you have trouble signing in, visit I can’t sign in to my account.
Step 2: Close your duplicate account
To close your duplicate account:
- Sign in to your ID.me account.
- In the top menu, select Sign In & Security, then select Privacy.
- Under “Manage my data,” select Remove my data.
- Select Close my account. Select a reason for closing your account.
- Select Yes, close my account.
Step 3: Add the email to your verified account
Note: After closing your duplicate account, you must wait 7 days before you can add the email address from that account to your verified account.
- After the 7-day waiting period, go to the ID.me sign-in page and enter the email and password that’s on your verified account.

I got an error message when trying to use or add an email
If you saw an error message, visit Troubleshooting "email already in use" issues for steps to fix this.
I’m not sure which account is my verified account
- When you’re signed in to your account, go to My Wallet.
- Look for an ID that says “Verified Identity”.
If the card isn’t there, you can proceed with closing your account, since it’s likely your duplicate account.
