You may receive an error that an email address is already associated with an ID.me account. This error can occur when creating an ID.me account for the first time or adding a new email to an account.

Types of "email already in use" errors
You may encounter one of the following error messages:
- “This email is already registered with another ID.me account.”
- “Email not added: This email could not be added because it is either invalid, already associated with another account, or you've attempted to add too many emails within a short period of time.”
Fix email errors
How you fix this type of email error depends on what you were trying to do that led to the error. Find the scenario that applies to you:
I tried to add an email to my existing account
To fix this error:
- Close your other account to make the email available. For step-by-step instructions, visit Using the email I want when it's on another account. After you close the account, sign in to your existing account and add the email address.
- Alternatively, you can add a different email address to your existing account if you have an email that’s different from the one that caused the error.
I tried to create a new account
To fix this error you will need to use your existing ID.me account. To sign in:
- Go to the ID.me sign-in page.
- Enter your email and password.
- Sign in to your account.

Troubleshoot email errors
I can’t sign in to my existing account

I don’t remember creating an ID.me account
If you don’t remember creating an account:
- Go to the ID.me sign-in page and select Forgot password.
- Enter your account email address.

My email isn’t associated with an account
If you enter an email address and it says there isn’t an account associated with that email or the email is not valid, contact ID.me Support for help with next steps. When you submit a ticket to Support, include the email address that you tried to add to your account.
