If you recently merged two ID.me accounts and are now having trouble signing in, or other issues, this article can help. You’ll learn who can merge accounts, what to expect after merging, and how to fix common issues like sign-in confusion or error messages.
Who can merge ID.me accounts?
You can only merge accounts if you see a 'Merge accounts' button. Not everyone has this option, and ID.me Support cannot merge accounts for you.
- If you see the Merge accounts button and recognize the email, select it and follow the prompts.
- No merge option available? Go to What to do if you have multiple ID.me accounts.
Common issues after merging accounts
Use any email linked to your merged account
After merging your accounts, you can sign in using any of the email addresses on your account. If you need to add or remove emails, visit Updating your account email address.
Use your most recent password after merging
After your accounts are merged, sign in using the password you used when creating your most recent account. You can use any email address on your account to begin a password reset. If you can’t remember the password, reset your password to regain access.
Fix sign-in errors after merging
If you receive an error message after signing in or verifying with ID.me at an organization, it could be due to a name mismatch between your ID.me account and the organization’s records. Here's how to fix it:
- Go to My Account.
- Ensure your account shows your current legal name.
- If your ID.me account name is incorrect, request an update to correct your name.
- If all your information is accurate, contact the organization you’re trying to access for further assistance.
Remove unrecognized emails or MFA methods
You should only keep emails and phone numbers on your account that you have access to. If there are any emails or phone numbers you don’t recognize, follow the steps below.
Remove an email
- Go to My Account.
- Select Manage Profile.
- Delete the unrecognized email.
Remove a phone number or MFA method
- Go to My Account.
- Select the “Sign In & Security” tab.
Select the trash can icon next to the unrecognized MFA method.
