ID.me may use your personal phone and number to confirm your identity, ensuring it's you and not a fraudster. This article explains what to do if you have trouble with phone verification.
Use your personal phone and number
When verifying your identity through Self-Service, you will be prompted to enter your phone number. ID.me will send a verification text message to your personal phone from a 5-digit number.
Using a shared phone plan
- Shared phone plans: You can verify your identity even if your phone number is part of a shared plan, such as a family plan. Ensure you use your own phone number; one that is not shared with others.
- Alternative options: If you don’t have a phone or use a shared device, you may be eligible to verify your identity through a video call. Learn more about verifying your identity on a video call.
Voice-over-IP (VOIP) numbers cannot be used
Voice-over-IP phone numbers are not accepted for security reasons. If you are using a prepaid phone, it must be registered with Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, or Sprint.
Troubleshoot phone verification issues
If you are unable to verify your phone number after multiple attempts, look for the "Verify identity on a video call" button. For more information, visit Verifying your identity on a video call.
