If you already have an existing ID.me or IRS account, you can access IRS tools and applications by selecting Sign in with ID.me or Sign in with an existing IRS username and completing additional steps.
For those verifying their identity with ID.me for the first time, you can choose to verify your identity with Self-Service or with a live Video Chat Agent. To verify with Self-Service, follow the steps below.
Self-Service — What you need
- Email address
- Social Security number
- Photo ID (Driver's License, Passport, Passport Card, or State ID)
- Smartphone or computer with a camera

If you are creating a new account, you will need to set up multi-factor authentication (MFA) to continue with your verification. Verify your identity with Self-Service
Once you are signed in to your ID.me account, you can verify your identity with a video selfie, or over a video call with a live agent. Follow the steps to verify your identity with a video selfie. How do I verify my identity over a live video call? |

1. Select Self-Service, then select Continue.Self-service is an automated process where you'll need your Government ID and a selfie. |

2. Select the document type you want to upload.You can take a photo of the document with your smartphone or upload one from your computer. |

3. Take and submit a video selfie.Your selfie will only be used to confirm that the person in the selfie matches your government ID. Your selfie and biometric data will be deleted within 24 hours of verification. If you’re taking a selfie using your smartphone and you don’t have a US phone number, select I don’t have a US phone number. |

4. Enter your Social Security number.If you don’t have a Social Security number, select I don’t have a Social Security number. |

5. Review your information and select Yes to confirm that it is accurate.After ID.me verifies your identity you will receive a confirmation message; this step protects you from fraud. If you don’t have a US address, select I don’t have a US address. |

What if I was unable to verify my identity?If you selected to verify through self-service, and were unable to verify your identity, you will be directed to an ID.me Video Chat Agent to verify your identity over a video call. This stage requires two identity documents and may have a wait time. |
